Before Surgery
In the pre-operative period, a normal diet is indicated, no forced vitamin or other “cure” is needed. Protein intake is proved to improve wound healing. However, smoking should be strictly stopped, at least 3 weeks before surgery, especially for large wound-area and delicate suture procedures such as abdominal surgery, breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast augmentation with implants, facelift, rhinoplasty. You can eat and drink 6 hours before the scheduled time of the surgery, but nothing after that!
What to bring on the day of surgery:
- Your personal documents, previous medical findings, final reports (etiquette of your previous implant), telephone
- Wear comfortable, casual clothes
- You can bring a non-carbonated, non-sugary, non-fibrous drink (mineral water, ice-tea, filtered juices) if you have an individual need for it, as well as some crackers.
- Please note that your should take care of an escort as you will not be allowed to drive. You escort should arrive in time.
- It is possible that you leave the hospital with a so-called drain tube (a thin tube connected to a suction bottle that leads to the surgical area). You can hide this bottle in the pocket of your pants or in a small backpack, or stitch it in your sweat shirt or belly band from the front.
- You can bring an MP3 player, a lightweight IT device, a robe, slippers, and button-up pajamas on demand, but it’s usually not needed during an overnight stay.
More important information
Tests required before surgeries with genaral anaesthesia:
- Laboratory (blood sampling): complete blood count, blood glucose, Na, K, CN, Creatinine, SeBi, GOT, GPT, AP, prothrombin (or INR), blood group + antibody screening
- ECG
- Breast ultrasound (essential for breast reduction surgery)
The patient should acquires:
- bra (can be a compression or simpler sports bra)
- belly bandage (rubberized, velcro at the end - no linen insert included - it is advisable to try it on beforehand)
- compression dress (as previously discussed)
